THOUGHTS OF FALL... Tuesday - 09/25/2012
I was up early this morning since I couldn't sleep. I watched the sun come up lazily over the rolling hills in my little community and decided to take a wee stroll through the complex. It was very quiet considering the hour, but then it always is. So completely different from the apartment complex I lived in for close to 21 years.
I met a couple of other seniors with a soft nod and a quiet good morning. I could hear the traffic on the main road a few blocks over. Noticed it was louder than normal due to it being Monday and folks were heading off to work. More of a busy rumble than the quiet pace it seems to carry on the weekends.
Fall was in the air but knew I knew the summer Gods would blow in with all their heat a wee bit later. So I enjoyed the cool breeze, stood back as a beautiful emerald green hummer enjoyed one of the feeders that compliment many of the apartments and watched the squirrels playing tag in the parking lot. One little fellow was pretty inquisitive, sitting on his hind legs chattering away until a parent or perhaps a sibling scolded him and he flicked his tail as he disappeared into a hole. LOL... Perhaps it will soon be time to start walking in the mornings again.
As I walked by one of the back apartments I caught the fragrance of what might have been a fresh baked apple pie. As I stood there, I could almost imagine cutting into the tender crust, watching the filling and apple chunks make way beneath my fork. My mouth was watering as I walked away and it made me want something sweet.
I had to smile because it brought back memories of my Mother and how much we all enjoyed her pies. It also had me thinking about Thanksgiving which is truly just a sort few weeks away. Hard to believe this year is so close to being over. Even harder to visualize the number of changes that have taken place in my life during the year.
I'm beginning to wonder if Fall is actually going to arrive in SoCal, but I know it is just around the corner. The weather guessers are still predicting 80 to high 90 degree weather for the next couple of weeks and it will still be mid-70's to mid-80's into the middle of October, with it cooling off nicely in the latter part of the evenings.
So... Knowing some of you are already enjoying what nature has to offer. I've seen the pictures, you lucky dogs... How about some Fabulous Fall Foliage to drool over. These are from Maine, Vermont, New England, Oregon, Arizona and even California. Yes, we do have fall weather, it just seems to come much later than any where else.
Enjoy!!

Wine any one?

Did you know...
The change in day length that causes the chemical changes in the trees leading to the bright colors starts June 21, the longest day of the year, as the sun starts to move south and the days become shorter.
